Access NFTS is the Outreach and Inclusion programme from the National Film and Television School. Run in partnership with Netflix, the programme is designed and delivered to encourage and support young people wanting to follow a career path into our industry.
Whether you are already interested in film, TV and games, or you haven’t yet discovered the world of opportunities behind the camera, we want to work with you!

Access NFTS, in partnership with Netflix, is designed to increase opportunities and access for the next generation of film, TV and games creatives. We also support work which improves diversity and inclusion within the NFTS community.
The programmes we offer are continually evaluated to meet the following objectives:
- Raise aspirations of those interested in the film, TV and games industry
- Increase knowledge of careers, and their relevant pathways, within the industry
- Teach and develop skills relevant to the film, TV and games industry
- Enhance awareness of financial, mental health, disability and general student support available within the NFTS and wider industry
- Increase awareness of the NFTS
- Widen participation and diversity of engagement, applications, and intake at the NFTS
- Improve knowledge of the accessibility of Higher Education/Film School, as well as the inclusivity of the film, TV and games industry overall

These visits include a campus and facilities tour, career overview, plus hands-on workshops designed and delivered by current NFTS students. Each workshop has a different theme and aims to develop skills and knowledge in different career areas. Workshop areas are subject to availability, and will be confirmed before each event. These events are for group bookings ONLY, ideally suited for FE students, or community groups

INSPIRE

The Access NFTS: Inspire events are designed to offer a deeper insight and provide skills, knowledge and inspiration for a career within the film, TV and games industry. Attendees will hear from NFTS students/graduates with links to the local area/region within a specific career area or role.
Through watching their work and hearing about their journey to where they are now, attendees will not only leave with knowledge and information, useful tips and advice from someone currently working in the industry, but hopefully also feel inspired to pursue a career in this industry themselves. There will also be small free interactive workshops available on the day for upto 20 people per session,

INSIGHT
Location: Online | Experience: Entry Level | Duration: 1 Hour | Age: Any (Under 16 must be supervised by an adult) | Cost: FREE
We want to meet with as many people as possible, but as a small team we can't get to everyone!
These online sessions are designed to both inform about creative careers behind the camera, and give you the opportunity to ask our students any related questions you have about our industry, our careers, or our school.
These informed sessions each focus on a different career area, with a different guest each sessions talking to our Head of Outreach about their pathway and experience.
These events take place from 6pm - 7.30pm online, and the focus of each session will be confirmed approx. 4 weeks in advance

We are excited to announce the return of our popular Access NFTS Summer Sessions for 2026!
These FREE hands‑on sessions are open to young people aged 11–16 and will run throughout August at our Beaconsfield campus. Each week, participants can choose from a variety of 2‑hour workshops, each exploring a unique career pathway in the Film, TV and Games industries.

The Animation Crash Course
Crack the code behind the famous "Animation Principles." You will learn the hidden tricks professional animators use to make characters look heavy, bouncy, fast, or alive in just a few frames.
Paper, Pencil & Flipbooks
Go old-school! With just a pencil and paper, you will sketch out rapid-fire sequences and watch your drawings spring to life right before your eyes.
The Play-Doh & Object Mashup
Grab Play-Doh, keys, coins, or whatever found objects are in your pockets. You will use stop-motion tricks to make everyday items crawl, shapeshift, and battle across the table.

Script Writers: Unleash Your Unique Voice!
Got a massive idea for a movie or TV show but worried it has "already been done before"? Here is the industry secret: every idea has been done, but it hasn't been done by you. In this workshop, you will unlock your unique creative voice, build unforgettable characters, and learn how to survive a real Hollywood writers' room.
Here is your production script:
Stage 1: The Voice Code & Character Blueprint
Crack your taste: Analyze your three favourite movies to map out your personal writing style.
The Wants vs. Needs formula: Give your main character an external mission (Want) and an internal life lesson (Need) to build a rock-solid story foundation.
Stage 2: The Obstacle Gauntlet (Collaboration Challenge!)
Pass the script: Design a character and pass them to the writer next to you
Survive the plot twists: Watch as others in the room throw bigger and crazier obstacles in your character's path.
Write the ending: Take your script back to decide if your character gets what they want, what they need, or absolute chaos!
Stage 3: The Writers' Room & Pitch Blitz
Team up: Form a mini writers' room
The random drop: Use random prompt cards to craft a high-stakes script together
Pitch the studio: Take the floor to pitch your finished story idea to the group before the final wrap.

Directing Fiction | BRINGING STORIES TO LIFE
This practical workshop offers an introduction to the craft of directing for screen, exploring how directors use visual storytelling and performance to bring scenes to life.
Stage 1: The Director as Collaborator
Briefly discuss how directors work with cinematographers, production designers, costume designers, editors and other departments to bring a shared creative vision to life.
Stage 2: Visual Storytelling
Explore the fundamentals of cinematic storytelling through framing, shot selection, camera placement and basic shot listing. Discover how directors use visual choices to shape an audience's experience of a scene.
Stage 3: Working with Actors
Explore how directors approach working with actors, communicate ideas clearly, and create an environment where performances can thrive. Through practical exercises, you'll learn techniques for discussing character, objectives and emotion, helping actors bring a scene to life.
Stage 4: Direct a Scene
Put your new skills into practice by directing and filming a short scene, applying visual storytelling techniques, collaboration and actor direction in a hands-on exercise.
No directing experience required. Just bring your imagination, curiosity, and a notepad and pen.

Game Design Hackathon
Forget code. Forget screens. The world’s best video games start with a pencil, a piece of paper, and an idea. In this high-energy workshop, you will step into the shoes of a game designer to build, hack, and completely break games from scratch.
Break the Rules
Take a game as simple as Tic-Tac-Toe, rewrite the rules, and test your new mechanics in real-time. You will fail fast, fix bugs on the fly, and discover what makes a game addictive.
Control the Player
In movies, directors control the camera. In games, players have absolute free will. You will map out the ultimate "Why" behind your choices and use physical blocks to subtly guide players through your environment.
The Lego Corruption Test
Build a mini world with exactly 20 Lego bricks and fuse it with the group's creations. Then, brace yourself. The instructor will corrupt a section of the game. If you can rip out the bugged piece without collapsing the entire structure, your team wins.
No software. No programming. Just pure tactical strategy.

Stage 1: Blueprints & Mood Boards
Map it out: Sketch a quick floor plan of your dream movie set.
Vibe check: Cut up magazines to create a mood board that captures the exact look and atmosphere of your scene.
Stage 2: The White Card Build
Go 3D: Turn your flat drawings into a physical miniature model using cardstock, scissors, and glue.
Test the angles: See exactly how cameras and actors would fit inside your newly built world.
Stage 3: Raiding the Prop Store
The ultimate vault: Gain exclusive access to our real-life Prop Store.

Unleash your inner filmmaker! We invite you behind the camera for a hands-on, high-energy mini-documentary workshop.
All you need is your phone and a single object from the natural world. Working in small teams, you will dive into its hidden history, script an engaging presenter-led story, and film a 1–2-minute natural history short film using professional documentary techniques.
It’s the ultimate crash course in cinematic storytelling.

Glass Hack: 2D Multiplane Animation
Bring your drawings to life using the ultimate old-school Hollywood special effect. Long before computer graphics, Disney used layers of physical glass to create massive depth in movies like Bambi. In this hands-on workshop, you will step away from screens to build and shoot your own physical, moving animation using glass, paint, and paper.
Step 1: Draw Your World
Sketch and colour your main background scene on paper. This will serve as the canvas and foundation for your entire animated world.
Step 2: Layer Up the Glass
Place a clear sheet of glass directly over your drawing. This introduces a physical 3D layer, separating your static background from your moving characters.

The AD Takeover: Assistant Directing & Crowd Control
Who actually runs a live Hollywood film set? Hint: It isn't the director.
Assistant Directors (ADs) are the bosses who control the chaos, command the crew, and manage hundreds of background actors. In this workshop, you will grab a radio headset, step onto a busy "set", and learn how to keep a multi-million-pound shoot from completely crashing.
Here is your production schedule:
Part 1: Radio Bootcamp & The Stranger Things Challenge
Comms check: Learn professional headset lingo and master the Walkie-Talkies just like real industry pros.
Spot the background: Re-watch a famous scene from Stranger Things. This time, stop looking at the main stars and analyze what the Supporting Artists (SAs) are doing
Part 2: Direct the Crowd (The Live Game)
Call the shots: Step up as an Assistant Director, draw a random crisis scenario from a bowl, and grab the iPad to film.
Control the background: Take charge of your peers as Supporting Artists, raid the props department, and cue the background action perfectly to make the scene look real.
Part 3: Script Breakdown & Crisis Scheduling
Deconstruct the page: Learn how to read a raw script like a producer and pick out every hidden prop, actor, and costume needed.
Save the schedule: Solve live production disasters to reschedule your shoot on the fly without blowing the budget

Most people watch movies, but great filmmakers listen. Did you know sound is 50% of the cinema experience? In this fast-paced, 2-hour hands-on workshop, you will step onto a live "film set" to master the gear, hidden mics, and secret audio tricks used in Hollywood blockbusters.
Stage 1: Stealth Mics & Movie Magic
Go behind the scenes of the audio crew. Get hands-on with professional lavalier body mics and learn how to hide them on actors perfectly to capture crisp dialogue without catching clothing rustle.
Stage 2: Master the Boom Pole
Take control of the iconic boom mic. You will learn the exact stance, arm strength, and aiming techniques needed to follow moving actors and capture perfect sound—all while keeping your gear completely out of the camera's frame.
Stage 3: The Live Mix Challenge
Take the hot seat as the Production Sound Mixer. Command your crew, read the chaos of the set, and run a real mixing board to blend multiple audio tracks in real-time before wrapping the shoot.

Forget code. Forget screens. The world’s best video games start with a pencil, a piece of paper, and an idea. In this high-energy workshop, you will step into the shoes of a game designer to build, hack, and completely break games from scratch.
Break the Rules
Take a game as simple as Tic-Tac-Toe, rewrite the rules, and test your new mechanics in real-time. You will fail fast, fix bugs on the fly, and discover what makes a game addictive.
Control the Player
In movies, directors control the camera. In games, players have absolute free will. You will map out the ultimate "Why" behind your choices and use physical blocks to subtly guide players through your environment.
The Lego Corruption Test
Build a mini world with exactly 20 Lego bricks and fuse it with the group's creations. Then, brace yourself. The instructor will corrupt a section of the game. If you can rip out the bugged piece without collapsing the entire structure, your team wins.
No software. No programming. Just pure tactical strategy.

Games Design and TV Entertainment are running TWICE. these are repeats so only book ONE date
All workshops are open to all aged between 11-16. Only exception is:
13 | PM | Location Sound Recording | Girls Sound Squad - This session is open to GIRLS ONLY. This is due to a specific focus on improving the gender balance in this career area.
You are welcome to book onto multiple sessions without any limit. However, we would like as many people to have the opportunity to join in as possible, so please only book sessions of genuine interest.
You do need to complete a booking form for each workshop you wish to attend. We apologise for any inconvenience.
These events are completely FREE of charge. To help us secure future funding so that we may continue to offer free events such as this, it would be greatly appreciated if you could answer as many questions in the booking form as you are happy/comfortable to. Thank you!
If attending both a morning and afternoon session the attendee is welcome to stay onsite. Lunch is not provided but can be purchased (Card payment only)
Parents/Guardians are welcome to stay at the NFTS (within the main canteen area) during sessions if useful.
Parking is strictly limited at the NFTS and requires booking. If you are planning to stay, please let us know asap so we can try and book you a space.
If not staying, you can drop off and collect from our car park. All attendees under 16 MUST be accompanied into and collected from inside NFTS Reception. This is a safeguarding policy
Our workshops are fully inclusive. We do not segregate based on experience, ability, knowledge, age, gender (except the one workshop above!) or health condition. We will do all we can to ensure a comfortable environment for everyone, please get in touch if there is anything we can do to help achieve the best experience for your attendee.
