With the pandemic causing film releases to grind to a halt, there is something wonderful about seeing cinemas re-open once again and a growing list of new films hit the box office. This includes the highly anticipated film Rocks, directed by BAFTA nominated NFTS graduate Sarah Gavron and edited by graduate Maya Maffioli. Rocks is a film uniquely crafted by a majority female creative team in collaboration with a young cast of first time actors.
The film follows teenager Rocks (Bukky Bakray) who fears that she and her little brother Emmanuel (D’angelou Osei Kissiedu) will be forced apart if anyone finds out they are living alone. With the help of her friends, she evades the authorities and navigates the most defining days of her life.
Hailed as ‘a film about the joy, resilience and spirit of girlhood’ the film celebrates some important themes including diversity and the pressures that teenage girls and young women face in today’s world.
Sarah Gavron who graduated from the NFTS in 1999 said of Rocks: “My hope is that young people who go to see the film connect with it, and that they recognise something of themselves on screen. It was so exciting to let the young people take centre stage. Endless thanks, respect and appreciation goes to the girls and to all the team who worked on this film.”
