The series is limited to six participants—giving you exceptional opportunities to practice your technique and have access to our tutors, Brian Gilbert, Udayan Prasad and Sean Bobbitt. Using professional actors and crews as well as specially constructed sets, you will have the opportunity to rehearse professional actors, direct a professional crew, and most importantly, receive feedback on your work.

“Absolutely wonderful, with fantastic tutor. For me it’s day and night compared to how I directed actors before”.

Week One: Focus’s on how to read a script and how to work with actors to get performance you want. You will have two days to work with professional actors as well as the opportunity to study and review scenes from the original films.

Week Two: The emphasis this week is on staging. Participants will learn how to block actors, how to find the dramatic beats of a scene and will finish the week with shooting and editing a scene with analysis of staging options.

Week Three: Explores film directing fundamentals from composition to light and from lenses to angles and movement. Using examples of lighting and camera styles, participants will be able to experiment through exercises and scenes filmed with actors.

Week Four: Concentrates on telling a story in cinematic images from the grammar of shots, to cinema language to the dynamics of camera movement. Participants will have the opportunity to test their skills directing a complex scene which will then be edited for review and feedback.

This Series’ has a separate application procedure – please DO NOT APPLY ONLINE, but send an email to shortcourses@nfts.co.uk attaching a copy of your CV and a letter stating your reasons for applying and your future intentions.
