MA COURSES
Producing and Directing Television Entertainment
WHAT OUR GRADUATES SAY ABOUT THE COURSE

Entertainment shows are at the centre of our television schedules. The massive range of programmes under the entertainment umbrella – Dragon’s Den, Buzzcocks, The Apprentice, Later with Jools Holland, Deal or No Deal, Peep Show and, of course, X Factor - give us our peak time viewing, not to mention many of our celebrities.

Television entertainment is ideas-driven and an inventive format can be a hit all over the world. But having the idea is the easy part: developing it to the stage where it it’s ready for production takes inspiration, guts, planning and, most of all, talent.

On this Television MA course, students learn to develop, script, produce and direct single camera and multi-camera entertainment programmes, using the School’s own television studio or out on location. Students graduate with:

  • the skills to direct TV studio multi-camera and single camera

  • the know-how to produce single items or entire entertainment shows

  • A practical working knowledge of current television production methods

  • the ability to generate entertainment programme ideas

  • the confidence and know-how to pitch those ideas to commissioning editors

  • Important professional contacts are made throughout the course, along with top industry placements and mentors.

Recent graduates of this course have found work in production companies as researchers, assistant producers, or in development. Others have directed comedy and documentary. In 2009 and 2010, TV Department graduates were named Broadcast Hotshots in TV industry magazine Broadcast’s annual round-up of the brightest and best new talent coming into television.

Students on this MA course have won consecutive RTS awards for their graduate productions.
